Join our aquaculture research team and contribute to research in: “Aquaculture nutrition, live feed and functional feed development.” Our research looks at how nutrition can be used to improve the health, growth, immunity and resilience of farmed aquatic animals. Our wider work includes areas such as live feed bioencapsulation, probiotics, prebiotics, immunostimulants, alternative protein sources and functional feeds. Depending on the project, you may be involved in: • Laboratory work and research experiments • Data collection and literature review • Daily aquatic animal husbandry • Aquaculture system monitoring and maintenance • Working alongside the PI, research assistants, laboratory manager and wider research team Think: can we make farmed fish and crustacean healthier and more resistant to disease through what we feed them?
Hybrid On-site / remote structure: Flexible and open for discussion depending on the research project. Expected time commitment is approximately 20 hours per week, with the exact overall duration and on-site/remote split to be agreed with the Team in Singapore.

SUPERVISION: You will be supported by our research team, with supervision provided by the Principal Investigator, Research Assistants, Laboratory Manager and experienced team members throughout the placement. LANGUAGE: The placement is based at James Cook University Singapore and operating in English, making it suitable for international veterinary students. RESEARCH ENVIRONMENT: Our Tropical Futures Institute specialises in tropical aquaculture research spanning nutrition, husbandry and aquatic animal health. This placement is particularly suited to veterinary students interested in aquatic animal health, preventive medicine, nutrition, fish husbandry and research. A major theme of our work is understanding whether approaches such as probiotics, prebiotics, immunostimulants and novel feed ingredients can improve fish health and disease resistance before disease occurs. JCU Singapore also has dedicated aquaculture research infrastructure, including its Aquaculture Research and Teaching Facility and a newly launched Asian seabass/barramundi broodstock and hatchery facility, supporting research across nutrition, animal health and sustainable aquaculture.
